28/09/2018 Bickley Park 150th Annivesary Tournament

This weekend saw a triangular tournament between Bickley Park, West Hagley and ourselves. Friday saw the two visiting teams go head to head with Bickley Park chasing down a competitive 239 from West Hagley to win by 6 wickets.
Saturday was the home team against Bickley Park who were here to celebrate their 150th anniversary.

Menorca posted a modest below par total of 184/9 from their alloted 40 overs. Cockroft snr and Sturgeon top scoring with 42 and 38 respectively Patel 4/33 and Read 3/38 doing the bulk of the damage for the visitors.

In reply Bickley struggled to really get going with skipper Cotton and Wilson turning the screw and picking up a wicket apiece.. Following on from the openers Hagger and Barker ripped through the middle order picking up three wickets each to dent any hopes of the visitors chasing down what many thought a paltry total. Even Sturgeon chipped in with a wicket extraordinarily enough, much to the amusement of the astonished onlookers.
Bickley Park lost their last wicket with the score on 161 giving the hosts an unexpectedly comfortable 23 run victory. Arguably the home sides best performance of the season to date.

Sunday saw regular visitors West Hagley finish the tournament against Menorca.
West Hagley batted first and posted a formidable 275/4 with Aneeq Hassan retiring having blasted 129 and fellow pro Amar Ullah finishing 84* Sunday skipper Roussel bowled superbly and economically picking up 2/32 from his 8 over stint.
Menorca started well in response with the skipper and regular visitor Wilcock giving the locals hope of an upset. Roussel was caught and bowled for 47 with the score on 88 in the 15th over. Wilcock went on to fall two short of what would have been a deserved ton and despite a couple of cameos from Wilson and Ball jnr Menorca fell 34 short. It was a sterling effort from our Sunday side against a very talented side.
Another terrific weekend at the home of Balearic cricket.

Match drawn

Saturdays game against Ditchling finished with the hosts comfortably beating our regular visitors. A big hats off to Julian Hagger on his maiden ton for the club. Also, a uncharacteristic hard hitting 70 including 10 boundaries from Roy Sturgeon. It was described on the side lines as astonishing.
Ditchling were never up with the run rate following some particularly tight bowling first up from Pawan Nerella and Grant Wilson. What we saw later in the innings could only be described as extraordinary from Dan Osterbery. Not only a shadow of his former self. He bowled superbly to clean up the tail taking 3/18.

Sundays game was one of the best we've seen at Biniparrell. The visitors posting a pretty impressive 254/2 with Eastman smashing a ton backed up well by Singh's 67. The home side sprinted out of the blocks in reply losing our first wicket in the 11th over with the score on 87 Mujahid Ali out for 69. At 20 overs Menorca were 169/3 James Davies with a quickfire 57. Menorca continued to flail the ball to all parts of the ground but were losing wickets regularly. When the 9th wicket fell 11 runs were still required. The experience of Dow and Roussel wasn't quite enough to get us over the line, the latter spanking a rank long hop straight to backward square leg with the scores tied in the 34th over. Cue jubilation from the visitors as there'd been some confusion in the score box. Following a lengthy consultation both scorers and umpires agreed to declare the game a draw.
Both games were played in great spirit and a presentation was made by yours truly on behalf of Menorca CC to commemorate Ditchling CC's 200th anniversary. Quite an achievement and long may they continue to thrive and visit the home of Balearic cricket where they will always be welcomed.

Menorca won by 1 wicket

A terrific start to the second half of the season. The Saturday team convincing winners with BAC´S big guns misfiring with the bat following a big total by the local side.

Sunday´s game was a different story all together. The game went to the wire and it was great to see the sexagenarian fearless Phil Wright batting alongside teenager Nico Ball. The former hitting the winning runs with the crowd on the edge of their seats. Local clergyman Paul Strudwick particularly animated at the close of play.
